General Statement of Duties
Under general supervision from the Master Mechanic, Mechanic 1 performs semi-skilled work in repairing and maintaining automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, heavy field equipment including diesel equipment
Distinguishing Features of the Class
The Mechanic 1 position is distinguished by its role as entry-level support to the Master Mechanic, focusing on assisting with the repair and maintenance of the Town’s motorized equipment. This position involves semi-skilled work and requires the ability to follow directions and learn from a more experienced mechanic. The Mechanic 1 position is crucial in maintaining the functionality and safety of the Town’s fleet by performing routine tasks and supporting more complex repairs under supervision. Mechanic 1 operates under the general supervision of the Master Mechanic, providing assistance in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, and heavy field equipment. The Mechanic 1 helps in performing routine maintenance tasks, such as servicing mowers and field equipment before mowing season, and ensuring that basic upkeep is consistently applied to all vehicles and equipment. Maintaining a safe and clean work area is a critical aspect of the role. Mechanic 1 must adhere to all OSHA safety regulations and contribute to a hazard-free environment. By assisting in keeping the Town’s fleet operational 24 hours a day, Mechanic 1 plays a vital role in the uninterrupted functionality of municipal services.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in the maintenance of all Town motorized equipment
- Helps in diagnosis and repair of all equipment including automobiles, light and heavy trucks and heavy field equipment
- Assists in the routine maintenance of all mower and field equipment before mowing season
- Helps maintain a safe and clean work area and observe all safety rules and regulations required by OSHA
- Helps keep the Town’s fleet of vehicles running 24 hours a day
- Works under the Master Mechanic to perform all other duties as necessary
Minimum Requirements
- Preferred knowledge of the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment: manuals associated with Town equipment; and OSHA rules and regulations.
- Must be able to take and follow directions from the Master Mechanic to help keep the Town’s fleet and equipment running.
- Basic knowledge of tools is necessary.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective work relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as the loader and dump truck in a safe manner, perform mechanical tasks, and to visually inspect the work performed.
Desired Training and Experience
- High school diploma supplemented with additional specialized training in small and large engine repair.
- Preferred experience in a responsible automotive maintenance position including diagnosis and repair of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, and heavy field equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Salary Information
- 5% increase in salary upon successful completion of a 6-month probation period
- Starting Salary: $41,558.22
- Career Range: $41,558.22 – $65,454.21
